I got this for my 9-year-old to do for a school project. It said it was fine for children over 8. The directions were terrible. Few words and lots of inaccurate photos to aid in the construction. The insturctions do not allow for the thickness of mortar in between the bricks to be able to hold it together. There was quite a bit of dissolving of mortar and redoing in order to build this. I'm a civil engineer so it's not as if I don't know what I'm doing. In the end, I ended up doing 90% of the construction for him. It was for a school project, so because mom had done so much for him, he had to do something else to show the work he did.
My 7 and 9 year olds tore this open today, carefully mixed the mortar, and began to build their Statue of Liberty. It was very difficult for them to control the mortar - I think the kit should have an even smaller tool for applying the mortar. We ended up using our fingers.
The kids also had some difficulty getting the pieces to lay on top of each other evenly, probably due to their application of too much/too little mortar on various pieces.
Finally, the mortar is not sticky, so once you set your piece down, it can still easily be pushed or moved. A couple of times the kids knocked walls out of alignment and had to rebuild it.
The completed project is covered with mortar, has some gaps, and is a bit lopsided. However, my kids enjoyed themselves, and were quite proud of their statue. The occasional frustration they experienced while building it did not detract much from their overall enjoyment.
This product is rated age 8 and up. This is one instance where I think the age rating is actually pretty much on target. Kids who are easily frustrated, or who lack fine motor skills, or who have sensory issues (the mortar gets all over your hands), may not enjoy this product.
