Never did I think my 4 yr old would love this, but he chose it to put on his list for Santa. It came and he plays with it constantly. The case is a huge plus. Very durable foam with great colors and fun pictures. Capitols included. Agree that I would have liked the states to be the puzzle shapes, but for my 4 yr old, he loves it. Great value.


This is a wonderful learning toy for my 2 year old that loves to memorize everything he sees. I will help him remember some of the names of the states and where they go, but that it what its all about anyway. Plus it is supposed to be for 3+. The only thing I don't like about the puzzle is that most states are made from several pieces making it a bit harder to remember their shape and size.


This puzzle is rated for 3+. My four year old needs help with this puzzle. Every piece fits with any piece. So you need to know the states locations. So each state isn't a piece. It's made of great quality! I don't know it is worth 25 dollars though. You can get some other nice floor puzzles a lot cheaper. But they are not foam and can't be washed ect.


This is a nice map, but I was hoping for individual pieces for each state.


Definitley needs adult help. Alaska is cropped and placed in a box below Mexico to keep the overall size functional but I dont like that positioning.

Large Wooden USA Map Capitals and States Puzzle

Product Description

Challenge your child's geography skills with this United States wooden map puzzle. It features colorfully illustrated pieces in the shape of each state. The pieces lay in a wooden tray that have the capitals and each state's outline under the pieces to aid your child in learning. Also includes each state's nickname on the front and state facts on the back like population, motto, size, capital and year of statehood. Measures 12" x 18".

I have an older version of this. It is a great puzzle and learning tool. My 5 year old loves it, but the smaller states don't have names on the pieces because the pieces are so small the names won't fit. They should fit on the board itself.


The girl I gave this to loves this gift. Not only does she know the name of the states and their capitals....she is also learning where each state is located. When she hears the news she knows where it is.


When we ordered this puzzle map of the USA we had hoped that there would be a piece for each state. Alas, that is not the case as the New England states are clumped together, as are a couple of other regions. We will keep on looking for the perfect puzzle of the USA for our grandchildren. This is good but it just isn't complete. Children are going to think of New England as one clump. They won't know the difference between Conn. and Ver.


I bought this puzzle a little over a year ago for my then 7 year old. What I did not expect was for my 2 year old to fall in love with it! He will sit and play with it by himself for a full 30 minutes, but he really loves it when mom or big brother 'help out' (he hands us pieces and then tells us where to put them). I always say the name of the state when I play with him and he can now identify several states by their shape. Great for tactile learners, highly educational, and fun to boot!



My three year old has quickly picked up a lot of U.S. Geography from this puzzle (can map most state names to their locations quickly) and enjoys putting it together on her own.




The only thing deluxe about this puzzle is the fact that it's made of heavy duty wood, so it's very durable. My son has had this puzzle since he was 3, and he is still enjoying it at age 5. He likes it very much and has learned a lot about states from using it. However, I think any states puzzle would be educational and fun. A person should rate the puzzle against other similar toys, and this one could use a lot of improvement.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the shape of Michigan (and Maryland) is cut wrong, many New England states are bunched together into big clumps, all I'm assuming so that the puzzle is easier for little tykes. The capitals are only shown under the pieces. They chose to put the nicknames of the states on the front of the pieces instead, and only some of the states merited a picture of something associated with that state. Many have no picture at all, or in the case of Hawaii, the picture actually obscures the shape of the islands that make up that state. The bold black outlines of each state just make for ambiguous or even inaccurate borders and no way to see which borders are actually natural boundaries like rivers. I find myself wishing I still had my little cardboard puzzle from my childhood, which had more accurate rendering of all the political boundaries, each state cut out separately, and all capitals located on the front of each piece with its star in the right location. I'm looking forward to when my son will graduate to a big boy states puzzle.


I bought this for my nephew at 2 1/2 years of age. Do you know that he could say the state of Texas, and recognize the little pieces like New York, Vermont, etc. just because of this puzzle. It is very appealing to toddlers.


I ordered this U.S. puzzle to keep at my house to use when my five grandchildren come over. We work on a few of the states each time they come. It's nice because under each piece is the capitol of the state so it can be used to learn those or just the state locations. I have found it quite useful, and the kids look forward to our little "game".


Great way to learn the states and capitals. I wish they made a world map puzzle like this.


I purchased this puzzle for my 7 year old son. He loves it and plays with it daily. He says the state names as he puts them in their spot on the puzzle and he is also learning the state capitals now. There is so much else to learn from this puzzle as well. I would highly recommend this puzzle, I am very happy with it. It is wooden, so my son can play with it as long as he wants.

My daughter got this puzzle for her second birthday. It was her first introduction to a map of any kind. She was very interested and loves to ask where the pieces go and what the states are called. My seven year old loves maps. This puzzle has been great for him. It helped him to learn the position of all the states and he even knows the state capitals now. Well worth the $10 price. My three year old plays with it too. She can build it by herself and has learned the names of several states. I highly recommend this puzzle.

Nice colorful map puzzle with sturdy wooden peices. Each piece has a couple of images that are associated with each state which is helpful for kids to learn little factoids about each state.

The puzzle was a birthday gift for my 3 year old granddaughter. It has bright colors and I love the fact that the pieces are in the shapes of the states. She has learned several states already. It also helps her visualize which states her cousins live in.


You have got to be kidding me right? They are selling this product as educational??? I am from Michigan and once again Michigan is not represented correctly. I don't know what the yellow blob is suppose to be, but it is part of Michigan. It is called the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and this map only has the lower peninsula blocked off as Michigan. Please don't buy this puzzle.


My 3 year old son loves this puzzle, but does get frustrated sometimes because the state pieces are mostly all separated at the state line. I actually prefer that the state pieces are separated at the state line.

He loves flying and loves to show with a model plane where he has been on the puzzle. I think my son at 3 has flown more than I did till I was 30.

My son loves all the Melissa & Doug floor puzzles.


I think this is a great puzzle. It is a good learning tool and also fun to put together! I bought it for my 2 1/2 year old grandson....


It's a good puzzle to teach kids where the states are, especially since the pieces aren't interlocking like a normal puzzle. It's fun and educational.


We used this puzzle in conjunction with The Scrambled States of America to help my second grader learn the names of the US states. This puzzle has well constructed pieces, and big pieces. Each states is its own piece (almost). With the "Scrambled States of America" each state had a personality. My son would then use the pieces in this puzzle to act out the characters. It made a topic, memorizing the names of the USA states, usually a boring task, into a fun enjoyable activity.


The puzzle was beautifully made ---sturdy, thick pieces that fit together nicely. It should prove to be quite useful to my [...] grand daughter who is learning about the states. The best part was its size -- quite large when put together. It was a hit!!


My 2 1/2 year old likes this because the pieces are big. It's impossible to work with unless on a hard surface, especially since the states don't click into eachother (but I like the fact that they are the real state shapes). As long as you have a big hard surface to do the puzzle on, it's very nice.


We've had this puzzle for 2 years and my 4 y.o. continues to enjoy putting this puzzle together with assistance. The pieces slide around easily and initially caused frustration. Tip: Put the border (interlocking) pieces together first and then fill in the states (non-interlocking pieces). We enjoy driving across America with little cars and learning about the states. I wouldn't recommend this puzzle for independent use for younger children. Highly recommend the puzzle to be completed with adult for tons of fun and learning.


I agree with the person who said it needs a cardboard backing or border. Since the puzzle is so large and it doesn't interlock, the pieces move when my son adds a state which makes him angry--he is not yet 3. I have to hold down the pieces when he adds the states and if I'm not available to help he gets frustrated. In addition, because some of the pieces are so large (oceans and texas) they tend to warp more than Doug and Melissa's other floor puzzles.

The puzzle's saving grace is my son has learned all states in a week.
