My son's friend was having a pirate-themed birthday party, so I typed in "pirate" in the search bar on Amazon. This toy came up and it was something different than the normal pirate toys (swords, eye-patches, etc.) It was also a great price. It ended up being the favorite present at the party.

I got this for my 5 yr pirate lover for his birtday. It has this awful noise that comes out of it almost all of the time you turn it on. You have to adjust the the dial until it stops that noise then go "treasure hunting". Everything seems to set it off except the things he's hunting for. stupid toy. lol. Well, in the end, it's just a cool hook he uses when he's dressing up as a pirate. Kinda expensive hook. Oh... and the little "treasures" that came with it... lasted about 3 days until they were lost. They were about the size of nickles.

This toy is junk. It only finds 'coins' when you are right next to them and basically already know where they are. It is complicated to set up and not worth the cost. Children don't understand what to do with it. I would not recommend purchasing it. Put your money towards a real metal detector.

As far as the aesthetics go, this is a nice looking toy. If you have a little pirate in your life, then they're going to be satisfied with this item on that alone. The build quality is good and I don't see it just falling apart at any time in the near future (in fact, like all of his toys, my nephew has been pretty hard on this one, and it shows few ill effects).
When it comes to the "fortune finding" component though, I'd have to say that it's much less of a success. Getting it to work basically requires that you "tune" it using a rotary dial (very similar to a pocket radio). Getting it to do that can be a little on the frustrating side, even as an adult, so you can imagine what my nephew's response to this was. Once it's working, it will detect the coins and other select metal objects, but only when it's placed near the toy. That was a little disappointing, but it does work when it's "tuned" properly. Fortunately, that functionality didn't hinder the fun, and since that's the most important aspect of a toy, I would buy it again if I had it to do over again.

I was nonetheless able to determine that it was a reasonably decent toy. My boys seemed very excited to open and look at it. It was sturdy enough but not exceptional. It's similar in function "sister" product (the Treasure Chest from Wild Planet) has received many good reviews. Unfortunately, this came dead in the water - the on/off switch or something downstream of that didn't properly engage the sound activation as it was intended. FYI, Amazon was very easy with their return process.
