You can never miss with these Melissa and Doug chunky puzzles. They are durable, easy to manipulate and a favorite of my two-year-old daughter. I buy them for my daughter and also buy them as gifts. So many babies get clothes at a shower; I buy these puzzles instead. Babies will be playing with them even before they are one-year-old. These puzzles are always welcome. I find the pets in this puzzle particularly endearing.


Melissa and Doug puzzles are great for toddlers who are learning how the world is categorized and put together. We own a standard poodle and our granddaughter constantly takes the piece out of the puzzle and says the dog's name. She's learning how to turn the pieces to fit them in the puzzle.



This is not a peg puzzle. The pieces are solid and large but not too large for a two year old to abuse. The pictures on front of each puzzle piece are also in the matching puzzle board. Each piece of puzzle is about an inch thick.



I have bought several for my nieces and nephews and they love them. The chunky pieces are great for little hands.


My daughter and I love the Melissa & Doug puzzles. This puzzle has nice big pieces that are easy for my toddler to grasp and the puzzles are always fun and colorful. I recommend the Melissa & Doug puzzles for any toddler.

I am a big fan of M&D toys - they are generally of high quality and seem to be hits with my boy/girl twins. As other reviewers have noted, the decals on the pieces of this puzzle do come off if they get wet/chewed on...so not good if your toddler is teething, or just likes to put things in his/her mouth still. But besides that, I really like this puzzle - my kids love to play pretend with the vehicles, making different sounds for each type. The "wells" that the pieces fit in are a bit shallow, so for younger toddlers (mine are 18-months), it can be a little difficult to get the pieces to stay in. I still like Melissa & Doug Large Shapes Jumbo Puzzle as a basic first puzzle for young toddlers.


My only issue with the new Melissa & Doug puzzles is that they are no longer painting the face and the backs of the pieces. They were much nicer before! But I guess it saves in manufacturing costs...so it's not all bad for those of us trying to conserve. It's also less paint to worry about your child ingesting, though I wonder what chemicals are in the wood itself? :/

Little ones love these puzzles, though! My daughter was really into them very early on, around 1 yr old, but my son didn't like them much until about 18 mos. So if you introduce these and they show little or no interest (other than chewing on the pieces!) then put them away for a while and bring them back out in a couple months! When children don't like or play with toys it's usually because they are not age-appropriate...so try again later!


My daughter LOVES this puzzle. She began playing with it and an animal Melissa & Doug puzzle when she was 6 months old. She still loves playing with them now that she is 13 months old. I am a preschool and kindergarten teacher and know the importance of puzzles in a childs development. These puzzles are great learning "toys." They work not only on fine motor skills but hand eye coordination and verbal skills. My daughter is just now figuring out how the pieces go in. Also, she loves to say "CAR" or "Vroom" every time she picks up one of the trucks. With the animal puzzle she picks them up and says the names of the animals and the sounds. Definitely worth the $$!


We have several Melissa and Doug chunky puzzles that my son loves, so we ordered this one to add to the collection. Sadly, this particular puzzle (and the dinosaur one) are not the same quality as other puzzles in the series. The older chunky puzzles have an image painted on each piece. Even the back and sides of each piece are painted in primary colors. The newer chunky puzzles are pressed wood cut outs with raw (and somewhat rough) edges and backsides with decals stuck on the front. My son is still teething and sticks everything in his mouth. Within five minutes of opening this puzzle the decals are already coming off. For a product that is supposedly hand made, it is shoddy. Be warned, this is not like the older version of this puzzle!


For the little boys who love cars and trucks, this is a great toy.

My son absolutely loves this puzzle. He plays with it every day. It still has not lost it's novelty even after a month.

It is very durable and he likes the big pieces because they are easier to handle.


I GOT THIS FOR MY 20 MONTH OLD GRANDSON...HE LOVES IT!
THE FAT PIECES ARE GREAT FOR LITTLE HANDS AND THE COLORS ARE GREAT ALSO...

Both of my boys (16 month old & 2 1/2 year old) enjoy this puzzle. Ours were painted all around though the back is a solid color paint. They enjoy playing with them as toys as well as a puzzle.


I bought the Melissa & Doug Large Shapes Jumbo Puzzle as my kids first puzzle, and was pleased enough with Melissa & Doug to purchase this as a next step. My kids are 18-months-old, and they love to pretend with each little vehicle - waving the plane in the air, or making a "woo-woo!" sound for the fire engine. The "wells" that each piece fits into are fairly shallow, so my beginner puzzle-doers find it a little frustrating when the pieces slip out easily - but this is more a reflection of their puzzling skills than of the quality of the toy. I would definitely purchase more puzzles like this from Melissa and Doug.


I just received this puzzle as a gift. Having another older-style Chunky puzzle, I am VERY disappointed in the quality. Instead of the designs being painted on, the front of the pieces are paper stickers and scratch off very easily. The old Chunky puzzles were much better quality and last longer. How disappointing that Melissa and Doug should make such poor quality puzzles!


We have several of these chunky puzzles. This one came with only the front of the puzzle pieces painted. The older ones we have (insects, farm animals, sea creatures, pets) were all completely painted and are fun as free-standing figures,not just puzzle pieces. Otherwise, it's a fun puzzle.


I got this puzzle for my son when he was almost 2. He LOVED it and he's about to turn 3 now and still LOVES it, but it's just WAY too easy for him. It's not a challenge anymore as far as a puzzle goes, but he likes to play with the pieces and drive or float them around. The age range says up to 5 years old but I think that's WAY too old. 3 years MAX, I'd say. Very sturdy and high quality, too.


these pieces are so adorable on their own and in the puzzle. what's really great also is that they correspond to the jigsaw puzzle as well--the same airplane, school bus, cruise ship. so we go back and forth from the chunky puzzle to the jigsaw, "another school bus." "two airplanes." i'm not sure who enjoys these puzzles more--the baby or the parents??? definatley another big hit!!!


Sturdy puzzle promising hours of fun for a young car lover.


And to me this means that my son loves to play with this puzzle. He likes all of his Melissa and Doug Chunky Puzzles. This one isn't his favorite but as he becomes older (is 16 months now) and more interested in vehicles, this one does capture his attention more. His all time favorite is still the Pets one and I can NEVER find the black and white cat because he carries it around everywhere.


If you're buying Melissa & Doug puzzles these are the best, the big chunky pieces are perfect for the kids to hold. Just keep in mind, if you're trying to fit them in a "Melissa & Doug" puzzle holder, they don't fit b/c their pieces are so chunky.


I found this puzzle to be really well made and my son (2 last November) really likes it. It has thicker pieces than most wooden-like puzzles and the colors are great too!

I love these puzzles for my grandson. They are so easy for his little fingers to grab, they are colorful and have a nice texture. They are educational and age appropriate. I would highly recommend these puzzles.


I was looking for this puzzle in particular for my little girl since it is the "girliest" one M&D have in the chunky puzzles. It is very cute and functional, but the sides and backs of the pieces are not painted like the other chunky puzzles I have. The particleboard is left raw and of course, goes straight into our 12-month olds mouth, so it is beginning to puff up in some spots. I expected better from Melissa and Doug as I have many of their other toys and love them. Otherwise, it's a good puzzle, just like the other chunky puzzles my older son loved so much.

This is a cute and simple puzzle. My two year old can easily put it together. Nice way to practice words of insects with him.


I love melissa and doug products. This product, like all of them is bright, durable, cute and educational. My two year old can't get enough!


My daugher really started to show interest in this toy around 13 months, but had trouble grasping the shapes. The bug shapes are thick wooden pieces that fit into a duplicate painted image. They don't sit deep into the board making it a little more challenging - good for the 14-18 month group. Beautiful vibrant colors.


My 18-month-old son has several of the Melissa & Doug chunky puzzles. They are cute with big brightly colored pieces. My son is still a little young to work the puzzles by himself (they are labeled for age 2 and up) but you can still use the pieces to help him learn the names of things. My only quibble would be this is labeled an insects puzzle but spiders and centipedes are not insects (spiders have 8 legs; centipedes have 30 or more legs; insects have 6 legs). Also I'm not sure which insect the piece in the lower right corner is supposed to be. These are minor complaints--I would still recommend the puzzle for kids who like bugs.

My son is 19 months old. Knew approx 10 letters. Introducing this item to him he now verbally knows 15 letter (3 weeks later)and 20 just by sight. He places every one in the slot it belongs. The slot allotted for the letters are printed the same as the block letter. It helps them located the letter by color and shape. It also helps motor skills. I praised him when he gets the correct letters in. He now praises himself by clapping his hands when he completes the puzzle.


This is a great puzzle but I wish the pieces where painted on all sides and not only on the top, that would make them more water resistant when drinks are spilled on them accidently. Also, the one we received is not completely flat so best if played on a carpet or rug insead of a solid surface.

My daughter is enjoying playing with it and is learning new words while playing. The letters are chunky enough that she can easily grab them and place them on the board.


We play with this puzzle every time we go to the library and love it!


Nothing negative to say about this chunky puzzle. My daughter finally showed interest in letters after playing with this. Great opportunity to work on colors, letters, phonics and vocabulary, with the little pictures behind the letters. I am 100% satisfied with this purchase.


I love Melissa and Doug puzzles, and this one is great. My son loves to learn his letters through it, and the chunky pieces are great for his little fingers. The paint has chipped a little bit, but that's probably because they've ended up in his mouth one too many times. Great product!


This just came in the mail, and my 19 month old and I already love it. The pieces are perfect for her hands; smoothly painted, durable, easy to hold, easy to remove and put back. The pieces are painted the same as their spots on the board, and every letter is a different color combination, making the matching of the pieces in their places easy. I'm very pleased with this purchase.


I have twin girls and they both enjoy this puzzle a lot. The big chunky letters are awesome. during the course of the day they spend atleast 2hr.



My 2 year old son loves this puzzle. The large pieces are easy to handle, and the colorful pictures keep him entertained. It keeps him engaged and he's very proud once he's completed it.
