This really is a simple cause and effect puzzle and kids love it, they learn animal sounds and to match .


I bought this toy for my niece when she was about 16 months old. She loved it. The pictures, the sounds. Three months later, she's grown with the blocks. Before, she lacked the dexterity to orient them in three dimensions so make the animals match up. Now, she can handle three dimensional movement, no problem, and her challenge is to get the front and back to match up in the right directions. She knows what animals they are , knows how to make the sound of all of them (woof woof!), and when a pig or a cow shows up in another book, that she can go over, get the blocks and arrange them to make the sound. She. Loves. Them. Melissa and doug - two thumbs way up.


Honestly. Are people ignorant and just negative at every given opportunity? What's with such horrid reviews of this product? One, Melissa & Doug has the BEST customer service. If your sound blocks don't give the desired noise, call M&D. They'll send you new ones free of charge. Seriously. (They very happily replaced my train puzzle bc it didn't make the requisite "whoo whoo" noise.) Two, I love a puzzle that has only two pieces. What parent wouldn't?? And, finally, this toy really does challenge younger children. We had it forever, and my son always loved to help me put the pieces together. At 20 months, he assembled his first match on his own - much to his and my surprise and delight. He now loves to make all the matches, many times over. This puzzle is definitely more of a challenge than the ones w/the corresponding picture or shape under each piece (a lot of M&D puzzles).


I love this toy no little pieces too lose - fun for infant to toddler. Makes great sounds. My youngest has enjoyed it at 1 month (the sounds) and my oldest now 3.5 still loves it. An great easy introduction to puzzles for toddlers and a great introduction to animals for infants. Win win! Not to mention its cute - I can display it instead of hide in with our plethora of plastic toys.


We buy lots of Melissa & Doug toys and puzzles, but this one was really pretty "cheesy" and definitely not worth the $$. The first one we received was also defective/didn't work. I've seen much better versions so I would shop around.


Great educational puzzle for young children. This is the only toy with batteries that we have in our house. This puzzle is sometimes used in evaluating kids.


My son received these for Christmas and his 1st Birthday. He loves it when he matches up the animals or vehicles and makes them make the sounds. He hasn't mastered it but has more fun with it. And now that he's 2 1/2 he's even more interested in how it works. Although a word of caution. When he was teething he thought these blocks were great to scrape his gums on. Which would have been fine because they are smooth but they have the little rubber dots to contend with. He managed to pop off one and now the ambulance doesn't sound. And he did not swollow the dot (which is easy to have happen). But these are essential cause and effect toys that all children will love. We gave our neice the farm set and she still plays with it daily. Great toy but another little thing to remember with the rubber dots...supervise and count the dots!


We received this toy for Christmas and our 1-year-old loves it! He hasn't yet mastered putting the blocks in order, but when we put it together for him, he laughs with delight. He picks up the blocks, chews on them, etc. and we have had zero problems.<p>Older kids (and - funniest of all - adults!) who play with it adore this toy. A great buy - who can beat under $10 for a classic wooden toy with a twist?<p>We have the Vehicle Sounds version of these blocks - both are very cute and a perfect birthday gift!

My grandson is a special needs child. This gift was engaging. He wanted to put the pieces in the correct place and enjoyed the sounds as he removed the puzzle pieces.


Awful Awful Awful! I am a teacher and was uphauled by the poor educational value this puzzle has. Let me go through the points:
1. the sound quality is terrible, and the sounds don't even sound like animals. We got the zoo animals, transportation and farm animals. When I wasn't looking I couldn't even match one of the animals sound to the animal name. I can't imagine that it would be that challenging to make a duck sound like a duck.
2. The sensors don't always work and when they do it's at an inapropriate time. I'll be in the other room making dinner and all of a sudden the pig (or was it a pig?) will begin squaking
3. The puzzle pieces don't quite fit correctly, so this can be frustrating for the child
So, overall I wouldn't waste your money. It's not your typical nice Melissa and Doug quality. Sad, very sad.


It would be ten times better if the darn puzzle wouldn't go off when I turned the lights off or on or sometimes even just walk by it. I ended up throwing the couple I had out!


This is one of my favorite puzzles. I do developmental therapies for children birth-3 and this puzzle is wonderful. The animal sounds made when the puzzle piece is correctly placed in the space encourage language development (children often will repeat/say animal sounds before words). Matching skills, labeling, and eye-hand coordination are also practiced. The puzzle is very sturdy. It would be nice if there was an off/on switch because of moo's in the middle of the night!


Good for the tiny tots to start learning their animal sounds. Easy for them to pick up and put back.


My 2 year old loves this puzzle, especially because of the animal noises. When we first received the puzzle the horse and dog sounds were reversed (i.e., the dog neighed and the horse barked). I called the number on the back to complain and we received a brand new, working puzzle with absolutely no hassle. We haven't had the problem with the battery compartment on the back that other reviewers had mentioned. The puzzle is durable and well constructed. I love Melissa and Doug products and will continue to buy them.


We bought this puzzle for our daughter, who loves farm animals. The sounds are great, and the quality high, but there's one problem. The sensors in each piece's slot that cause the sounds to be made are way too sensitive. We found that turning off the lights (in either the room the puzzle was in, or an adjacent room) would set off one of the sensors, and a "mooo" would inevitably be heard. You have to cover up the entire puzzle (a heavy floor pillow works) to avoid this. I don't know why they didn't make the sensors mechanical - otherwise this is a great puzzle.


helped my one year old not only associate animal sounds with the right animals but also use the puzzle. highly recommended!


The puzzle is fine but I was not happy with the delivery time


My parents had purchased this puzzle at a children's boutique a few hours from home. We discovered once it was open that the sounds did not work. I was disapointed because there was no chance that we would drive back to return it. Instead I called the 1-800 Melissa and Doug number and described the issue to the person on the phone. They were very nice and appologized for the problem. They shipped us a new puzzle at no cost. Great Customer Service!!! The new puzzle works great and my 18 month old loves it. She has learned all the sounds and it really keeps her entertained better than a "regular" puzzle.

I bought this for my niece and nephew (twins under 2). They immediately began to play with it and seemed not to tire of it. Not only is the Brand an excellent one that is made from quality materials; it has been tested for many of the toxins found in other toys and consistently exceeds our current safety standards (see [...])
The material is sturdy and can stand up to kid handling, this is not cheaply made stuff! And best of all the price is right. Who says you can't have quality at a fair price?



I bought this for my 18 month old because she loves anything with flaps. I should have waited till she was alittle older though because the little pieces go missing if you are not working with her on it. We lost the plane to her fascination with throwing things in the garbage can. Overall it's a fun toy that she likes alot.


I got this for my son who turned 2 in August. He's always enjoyed things that open and close. He really enjoys this puzzle, he takes all the pieces out and doesn't put them back in. :-) It seems very sturdy and I also like the fact that it's magnetic. The pieces don't fit in perfectly, like a regular puzzle, but you can match the animal/item with the place that makes most sense and also by matching the backgrounds. The doors are fun to open and close. I think my son will enjoy it for quite a while longer.


This toy has been a hit with my children and their friends. They enjoy finding the pieces behind the doors, and they also play with the pieces on the fridge. We make the sounds of the animals or objects when we find them. It's a great memory toy, too. I will ask my child to find a certain piece and it hasn't taken long for them to remember where each piece is.


I am a speech/language pathologist and this toy is a huge hit with my kids. Since the pieces are magnetic, it is easy to keep up with them. The pictures are easy to identify and you can make up stories with all the different animals. I highly recommend this toy.


My toddler LOVED this puzzle. It is a high quality puzzle that will not fall apart. However, I disagree with the age recomendations on this. Our toddler recieved this as a Christmas gift last year and was only 16 months old. He played with it then and mastered it a few months later. It's a great activity to take to church because it's quiet and keeps little ones busy for a little while. At 28 months old, he doesn't play with it near as much. I believe older children would be really bored with this.


I love this puzzle and my daughter does too.
Most of the pieces can go in different spots, so there's not always only one right answer.
The doors are surprisingly sturdy even after many uses.
I lost two pieces and called the manufacturer- the replacement pieces are on their way- no questions asked.
I like the magnetic feature. It keeps the pieces in the puzzle more than the average puzzle.
Overall I am always pleased with their products.


This puzzle is a wonderful way to spend time with your child. It is great for opening up and communicating with your toddler. My son (2 1/2 years) learns best through doing so he doesn't like to sit for too long. When I first sat down and showed him this puzzle we played with it for 25 mins. He had so much fun hiding the animals and opening and closing the doors. It has continued to hold his interest and prompted him to talk more....a big plus for us. I have high praise for this puzzle and all interactive puzzles. They provide, learning, communication and great fun!


I bought this puzzle for my 10-month-old daughter because she loves flap books - the hide and seek hinged pieces are perfect for her little fingers to open and close. The pieces that are hiding aren't too small and are easy for her to take out. She's loved it.

This fun and challenging Farm Cube Puzzle will certainly entertain the kids. Each side of the beautifully illustrated, solid wood cube is part of a different farm animal puzzle - there are six puzzles in all!

I gave this puzzle a high rating only because of its immense learning value. The quality of the puzzle is diminished because the stickers on each side of the puzzle can easily peel off [its just paper and not painted on], so one has to be very careful in handling the puzzle blocks. On the other hand, the educational value of this puzzle set is very high - young ones can spend quality fun time trying to figure out how to put an animal 'together' [there are six animals in all - pig, chicken, sheep, cow, horse, and duck]. Each puzzle block has six sides and children can learn to manipulate them to put an animal together. A set of pictures on the back of the puzzle box provides a visual cue as to how to piece each animal together.

The puzzle requires quite a bit of higher-order thinking skills and I would recommend this to preschoolers and up.


I had a puzzle like this when I was young. SO much fun! I had this in my hand. I wanted to buy it so badly. But as I looked through the shrink wrap I saw the pictures were peeling off the cubes. I thought, OK bad puzzle. But then I looked at ALL the puzzles they had at that store....they were ALL peeling. Usually you can't beat Melissa and Doug quality but this time is not one of those times. There has to be a better way to put the pictures onto the cubes.


I purchased this puzzle 5 years ago for my (now) 8 year old... it sits out on the coffee table 24/7. STILL my kids play with it.. they time each other, put it together upside down, and other creative stuff. It still amazes me that this simple puzzle gets played with at least once a week by an 11 year old, 8 year old and 5 year old. Best Christmas gift we ever got. Minor peeling of stickers, but you gotta expect that!


I was surprised to see a Melissa and Doug product to be made so cheap.The sticker peels very easy.Terrible desing and a waste of money.


This is a very durable 6 sided puzzle (6 different pictures) that has provided hours of fun for all my grandchildren! It's great for the really young to seem emerging shapes and to understand how things go together. Good buy and keeps kids occupied!


the quailty is VERY poor. Even for Melissa & Doug. I agree with the reviewer that called it "typical cheap "made in China" junk". Though- it's fun junk! This puzzle may not last through both children but my 4 year old and I have a lot of fun playing with it now. :o) Can't wait to buy him the "pets" version.


I bought this for a 2 year old. Woe is me that I didn't open the plastic cling-wrap on the toy and inspected it closely before gifting it. As soon as she saw it, she wanted to open it and what child wouldn't want to play with a bright new toy?

Unfortunatly, 10 minutes into play time, I saw that the cheap vinyl covered cubes were already(!!) peeling. The cubes underneath are clearly MDF and the whole game board, with the singular exception of the wooden dovetailed pine tray seems to have been made with as little regard to quality as possible.

We have now played with the cubes 3 times and the majority of the 16 cubes are peeling, some on more than one side. The corners seem to curl up readily and on one face of a cube about 1/5 of the vinyl covered face is folded under itself.

Yes, this toy is an engaging toy. The images are bright and attractive. Sadly, it is not up to par with other toys of its kind and I would put money down that a month of playtime will have it looking as beat up as if it was through the ringer for a couple of years.
Melissa and Doug should consider silkscreening the images directly onto their blocks (and then varnishing, of course!!). They should be able to do so with only a slight increase in cost and still be able to price this toy in the $10-20 price point. As it i the toy is a waste if money and time and worse, if you give to a child who loves it, you'll be doubly sorry when you have to discard the blocks when they are unsafe to use or simply in deplorable condition.
Melissa and Doug, this toy is ruining your reputation!!


Great puzzle. Very challenging and it stays put in it's tray so it could even be used in the car.


My almost [...] year old son has had this puzzle for about a year now and he absolutely loves it. It is just challenging enough, but not overwhelming for him. Each side of the puzzle has a different color border, so that is how my son goes about finding the right pieces for which animal he is trying to put together. I have brought this on the airplane and it has entertained him for very long stretches of time. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have a box or bag to contain the pieces -they are all loose. I solved this by putting the whole thing in a giant zip-lock. I am surprised at some of the bad reviews. This is a great puzzle.


My only complaint is that this is the only cube puzzle they've got!! What an excellent idea! My daughter, who just turned 3 last week, loves it and has been playing with it every day for a month! She has already mastered all the 24 and 48 piece puzzles and this was the next level...it has challenged her because, being 3D, is not as simple.
We have not had the problem other people here have mentioned about peeling, but hey, even if one of these days we have the problem I won't be complaining much given that this was 9.99 and already is has been worth much more than that.
