Melissa and Doug Geometric Stacker

Product Description

Get busy stacking all different shapes, colors and sizes. This fun Geometric Stacker comes with 25 durable pieces to match and stack on a solid base. Perfect for building shape, color and size differentiation skills. Pieces made of solid wood.

Customer Buzz
Young toddlers enjoy taking apart. Older have skills to sort. Wooden toy should be around for years.

Customer Buzz
My twins got this for Christmas when they were 21 months old. For the last three months it has been their favorite toy. They quickly learned how to sort the shapes onto the poles and stack them in order. You would think they would outgrow it too quickly, but now they have the challenge of matching the same-size square pieces and getting the notches to fit together. For some reason, these little challenges fascinate them and keep them very busy at this stage. I also plan to use it for their first try at stringing beads.

Since my kids are older & steady on their feet, the three posts sticking up really aren't a problem. Even if they fell on them, the posts aren't sharp at all, and I doubt it would hurt.

Also, the paint on our set is different from the current picture. Ours has lighter colors, with a light green ball, cube, and octagon on top. We had no problems with sticking paint.

The only problems we have had are: 1) my kids throw the ball & it gets lost, so I just set the ball aside before letting them play with the set, and 2) the paint on the inside of the circle pieces has worn a little by now, which occasionally makes the pieces get stuck on the posts (pulling the circle back off & flipping it over usually solves this). These are VERY minor complaints, compared to the amount of time my kids have spent playing with this toy. I highly recommend it for 18-30 month olds.

Customer Buzz
I really like Melissa & Doug toys however, we've only had this toy for two days and with three children playing with it (total probably 4 hours of play so far), the sticks were not glued into base and quickly popped off (the baby did that first thing after removing all the pieces). The other part I did not like was the fact that paint is starting to come off already on the square pieces (on the corners). Even if the paint is lead-free, I still don't think it should come off after two days of play. I am hoping to write the company and ask them about that.

Customer Buzz
Our two year old dearly loves this toy. Once he starts playing with this he
stays with it for twenty minutes or more. He doesn't have the hang of what goes where yet, but it is quite intriguing to him and he loves all the different colors and shapes. So far, we are not having paint chipping issues. (Another M&D toy we bought at the same time as this is already chipping.) The straight wooden sticks are something to think about although the wooden frame does not wobble at all. I would rate this 5 for fun, 4 for education, and 3 to 4 for safety.

CBC News excerpt regarding this product quoted below:

"The federal agency (Health Canada) issued the barium-related recalls for the seven children's toys between August and October...In August, (recall) notices were issued ...A stacking toy set called "Geometric Stacker" by Melissa and Doug (item 094730, UPC 000772005678, batch ZP1207)."

Customer Buzz
Maybe it's non-toxic but after a half hour of our toddler playing with this - although he enjoyed it - his hands were red and there were red stains on his t-shirt. So its in the garbage now. Is it non-toxic I don't know, though if toy makers used toxic paints for years and lied about them, there's little reason to believe a label that boldly says non-toxic. How many pieces of clothing out there with Gucci labels are not made by Gucci?

Customer Buzz
My 14 month old loves it and so do i because it's educational. He is at the stage where he loves putting the lids on things, and things on things, wish i had bought this sooner.

Customer Buzz
My kids love the this toy, they got it for their bday and we now use it for car trips, aside from them now learning how to throw and them throwing them at one an others car seats only a few feet away from one another they are great. I might make them an only supervised toy now that I read someone had to go to the ER because the kiddo put it on their finger. But I mean it seems quite safe and solid to me. My kids usually break toys with in a few months together. So I will update this if it does break as another reviewer stated.

Customer Buzz
This is a very high quality toy. Something that you come to expect from Melissa and Doug. I really like that there are three options of shapes to stack, it even increases the difficulty with the blocks that you have to link in order to stack them properly. This toy is a little advanced for my one year old, however, he was able to stack the shapes in random order and also like to throw the shapes. This will be a good one to pull out again in about 6 more months.

Customer Buzz
I purchased the stacker for the nursery at church. The kids seem to really enjoy placing the pieces on the pegs - not necessarily in order, but that's o.k. This teaches them great hand-eye coordination. The only problem with having this in a church nursery with other toys and several children is that it is hard to keep track of all the pieces - they seem to scatter and walk away. We lost one piece after the first day. This is not a design problem or complaint of the toy. Overall - I think it's great!

Melissa and Doug Wooden Sushi

Product Description

Sushi anyone' This slicing sushi set is a meal fit for an emperor! It comes with three types of pretend-play sushi rolls -- shrimp, tuna and salmon roe -- plus egg toppings and a few more condiment "extras." Includes chopsticks and cleaver, too. 24 pieces in all. Measures 9" x 10" x 1.5".

Customer Buzz
We bought this for our daughters 2year birthday, and every time she plays with her kitchen, she gets out the sushi and starts "cutting". We LOVE sushi and think this is a great way to introduce her to it so that she may like it too when she is old enough. I love how the chopsticks help grab the pieces and they are beautifully made. It will last a very very long time. I couldn't be happier with it!

Customer Buzz
If your kids are Orange County Fashion Island hipsters like mine, then you need to get this item. What could be more fun that playing sushi chef? Not much!

In all seriousness, this is a well-build eye-catching toy that your children will certainly enjoy!

Customer Buzz
What to say. Offered to our daughter for Christmas. Very sturdy. A lot of fun for her to cut the Sushi and serve them during picnic parties organized with friends around her plastic kitchen. A lot of fun

Customer Buzz
We bought this for our 20 month old daughter for Christmas. She now loves to say sushi and have us help her "cut" the sushi rolls. It's a great way to introduce her to new food and develop fine motor skills for using chopsticks.

Customer Buzz
My daughter loves the sushi set! She sits there and cuts the sushi rolls with the kid safe butcher knife. Don't get me wrong, all these are made of wood and have no sharp edges. The sushi pieces fit together using pieces of Velcro. I deducted 1 star from durability due to the fact that the Velcro can wear quickly with excessive play and the little straps around the Sashimi can come off quite easily and get lost. It's not the most educational toy unless your child plans on running a sushi bar when he/she gets older but hey, this is a toy, it serves its purpose when it comes to fun.

Customer Buzz
I originally purchased this for my niece who is turning one. However, when the package arrived my husband and 2 children, 8 and 6, couldn't stop drooling over it so we opened it and they play with it constantly. It is a great gift for all ages.

Customer Buzz
We purchased the Melissa and Doug Wooden Sushi set along with the Melissa and Doug Cutting Food Box for our sons at Christmas (see my Amazon review). It was great to mix and match foods from two cultures!

Here's four reasons we enjoyed this toy so much:

1. It was perfect for quiet play and indoor play during winter.

2. We reinforced good eating habits during meals with the playset.

3. Our sons learned a lot of vocabulary, especially verbs like cut, slice, chop, and mix.

4. Our sons had lots of FUN playing with the food box!

I'm a big fan of Melissa and Doug products: fun, educational and durable. You can check my other Amazon reviews of their floor puzzles.

Customer Buzz
I purchased this for my little girl and we have so much fun playing with it. The velcro make the blocks stick together which is fun when you are cutting the sushi and rolls. Lots of fun and very durable! I love this brand!

Customer Buzz
I bought this for my 18 month old son to start trying some pretend play with him (younger than the recommended age, I know). He LOVES the sound the sushi makes when you "chop" it, although he can't really chop it himself. He likes to pull the pieces apart and listen the velcro. He plays with the chopsticks. The only part of the set that we had to take away was the "ginger" - he kept putting it in his mouth and sucking on it, which made it soggy and gross, but I'm sure an older child wouldn't do that.
Very cute, very durable, painted wood sushi set. Great for the sushi lover's child!

Customer Buzz
My 4 year old son got this as a gift, and he loves it! I know that it will teach him about different types and cultures of food, but for now and to put it simply... it's just fun! We make food and pretend to eat it, and he uses it for other creative ideas like making bridges.

Melissa and Doug Pizza Party

Product Description

Attention pizza lovers! Create your own "personal pizza" with this sturdy wooden pizza set. It features six thick slices served in a brightly colored tray, complete with cutter, spatula and over 50 toppings stored neatly in a wooden box. It's hours of imaginative fun any way you slice it.

Customer Buzz
I love Melissa and Doug toys, they are a little pricier than some but are quality poducts, the kids love to play with them, they are very realistic and they last forever. Whith a little care my grand daughter's children will be playing with these toys. Wooden toys are great. My grand children are still playing with Fisher Price Toys that were my daughter's, and Melissa and Doug toys are of the same caliber.

Customer Buzz
Like all Melissa and Doug toys this is well made and durable. My grandchildren love playing with it. I have bought one for both of my daughter's families with young children. It is educational as well as fun.

Customer Buzz
I purchased this set along with four other sets and a food stand for my son for his birthday. He wanted to open a store and sell things. He has really enjoyed making and selling his food to his brothers and his father and I. The set is a good size and has been played with in our house by girls and boys ages one to nine, not to mention how much I have played with it with them. Highly recommended.

Customer Buzz
My 2 year old daughter ejoys a book that talks about having a pizza a party so we got this for her as a xmas gift and she really likes playing with it. She likes most cutting the pizza using the pizza cutter. I think it's great for her coordination to be able to place the different condiments on the pizza, to cut it and to serve it. Everthing is made of wood and is very durable. You velcro the pizza together and velcro the condiments on. It's great, we love it.

Customer Buzz
Durable cute and fun. My 5 yr. olds favorite kitchen toy she loves to sort and count the toppings before she serves the family slices.

Customer Buzz
We got this toy for our daughter who will turn 3 soon. She seems to like it, but doesn't play with it all that much yet. (We just gave it to her for Xmas about two weeks ago.) It is clever that the pizza toppings velcro to the top of the slices, but the slices also velcro to each other, which makes it difficult for her to "cut" the pizza and remove the slices. The toy seems well made and durable and I expect that she'll like it more over time.

Customer Buzz
I gave this to my son and one for a friends daughter and they both spend lots of time serving up pizza. Very well made. A great toy from Melissa & Doug!!

Customer Buzz
My two kids received the Pizza Party as a Christmas present and they have not stopped playing with it. We have had pizza served to us almost every morning, as well as throughout the day. It is nicely made and we love the fact that the toppings velcro on so they won't fall off as the kids are playing. Even though there are a lot of pieces, I like how the tray has separate compartments so the extra toppings can be stored.

Customer Buzz
I just got this for my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She loves to play with it. She experiments with different toppings and loves to 'serve' us pizza when she's done 'cooking' it in her play kitchen. She really likes to cut with the little pizza cutter included.
We've only had it a few days so I can't comment on durability but it seems to me that it will hold up fine. I think the paint will eventually start to wear and I suppose after repeated use, the velcro might become weakened but other than that I see no negatives with this toy. For the price, it was well worth it. She will get a lot of use from this I think.
Well made too - my daughter is pretty rough with her toys and since this is all wood construction (even the box is thick wood) it will stand up to her abuse.

Customer Buzz
My girls aged 1 and 4 love the Melissa and Doug food sets. They are very durable and cute. It's a nice break from all the plastic toys out there. My only complaint is that the box does not have a lid. This makes keeping everything together so much harder...

Melissa and Doug Food Groups

Product Description

Who's hungry? Mix and match to make a yummy meal. This 21-piece set is full of well-balanced, nutritious pretend food. All four food groups are individually boxed in sturdy wooden crates for storage, sorting, and stacking.

Customer Buzz
I purchased this set along with four other sets and a food stand for my son for his birthday. He wanted to open a store and sell things. He has really enjoyed making sandwiches and selling his food to his brothers and his father and I. The set is a good size and has been played with in our house by girls and boys ages one to nine, not to mention how much I have played with it with them. Highly recommended.

Customer Buzz
Very durable. My daughter has played with it for three years. I threw the orange and the apple away after being in the line of fire of a two year old's temper tantrum. Now she's four and the tantrums have passed. I guess I should have saved them but wooden fruit hurts!

Customer Buzz
I really like the Melissa & Doug quality. I got these food groups for my daughters kitchen set. She likes to name the items and she especially likes the cheese triangle. She should get years of use from this set.

Customer Buzz
My 1 year old and 3 year old love this item. The food groups are a great way to teach children about the four food groups and help them begin to differentiate between them. These products will not bend or break and are great when played with correctly or tossed around by a 1 year old.

Customer Buzz
The food is realistic and my son has a lot of fun cooking things up, the little wooden bins are great for storing the food and are very durable. The only thing to watch out for is that some of the fruit is made from solid wood and if thrown could be dangerous to anyone in its path. Overall great quality product my son has enjoyed playing with this much more then the plastic food.

Customer Buzz
This toy is a great educational toy, but because it is made of wood it can be a danger to toddlers who are still into throwing things around and biting things. Some of the pieces could have been better made to look more like the object........the tomato, orange and egg for example just look like coloured shapes.

Customer Buzz
I ordered this from Amazon a year ago for a great price with the FREE super saver shipping, and it has gotten a lot of play. My now 2 1/2 year old daughter and her little friends all love to play kitchen and whip up some fun with this food. (I know the recommended age is 3 and up but in my opinion this is really fine for a 2 year old, maybe just watch the egg if they put things in their mouth still) I would definitely buy this again. Another great Melissa and Doug product!

Customer Buzz
My son loves this set. The only downfall is that the orange is just a painted ball and has been permanently taken away due to throwing. The same is about to happen with the lemon, egg and tomato. So, if you have a thrower in your house, beware! They are solid pieces and hurt! Other than that, love it! My son loves to make burgers and hot dogs (no bun with the hot dog though). He also loves to go to the "store" and "buy" milk and bananas. Love the set, and the crates the food comes in!

Customer Buzz
This doesn't compare to the birthday cake or pizza for fun. For fruit & vegs play food I would suggest the velcro cutting food instead. Way more interesting.

Customer Buzz
I wanted good wooden pretend food (hate plastic toys) and I wanted a nice starter selection for a good price without having to buy, say, a separate veggie or fruit set. This is a basic food groups set so you get (4) little wooden crates filled with meats, veggies-n-fruits, dairy, and grains.

That said, after receiving the product, I can confirm that buying separate sets would have yielded superior pretend food, but would have quadrupled the investment. Besides, the kids love it and engage in all the rich, imaginative and independent play parents love to peripherally watch while reading the newspaper or something.

In summary,
Pros:
-All wood, nice all-in-one selection
-Kids like it a lot

Cons:
-Made in China
-All the produce is smaller than life-size -- even the egg and lemon (whereas the individual sets include many life-size items)
-Paint from some of the produce arrived scuffed onto other produce (enough to induce a mildly annoyed "come-on" but not enough to initiate a return or obsess over)

Melissa and Doug Band in a Box

Product Description

Little musicians can form a traveling band with this compact wooden music set. Featuring ten fun musical pieces, this quality kit is the perfect way to introduce youngsters to musical play. Pieces include a colorfully designed pair of maracas, hand cymbals, tambourine, triangle and two other wooden noisemakers. Every piece fits conveniently into a sturdy wooden storage case, making clean up a piece of cake.

Customer Buzz
Purchased for our 2 1/2 year old as a holiday gift, and she just loves it!
We have many types of instruments around the house, so this makes a wonderful addition to what we already have, and gives the kids more options when playing.
Nothing broken, or even chipped yet, which is great! Little one will knock the maracas together, she beats on the tambourine with the triangle stick like it's a drum. This set has held up very well, indeed!

Customer Buzz
My daughters love this box of instruments! My only complaint about it is that the xylophone is out of tune. It is made of wood, and when I try to play simple tunes like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, it sounds bad! The kids don't mind the out of tune xylophone, though - and they love all of the pieces. The only instrument missing is some type of drum. I found a small drum that fits with these instruments to add to the set.

Customer Buzz
This toy is so weak that my son broke the tamborine when he tried to play it.....snapped like paper.Do not buy........

Customer Buzz
Completely satisfied with this purchase. For $18 I think the durability is right on par. My 2yr old son really enjoys these toys. Big hit in our house.

Customer Buzz
It was a Christmas present for my 3 year old. The tambourine broke in one day. The symbols are very small they do not make any noise. The maracas wood is so thick you cannot hear them shake and very heavy. The triangle string broke after a week and could injure the child. The other two instruments are ok but the clapper is too loud my daughter holds her ears when she hears them and I am afraid it will wake the neighbors. My child does not play with it. My husband refuses to return it because he said they would not believe how the tambourine broke so quickly. So they sit in the corner, where she plays with everything else except these instruments don't waste your money.

Customer Buzz
I bought this for my 2 year old daughter and she's in love with it. It reminded me of my elementary school music teacher's repertoire when I was young. My daughter loves music and dancing so it seemed an obvious choice to get for her, now she can make her own music.

Customer Buzz
We got this for Christmas for our 15 month old son because he loves music. This is a really great set that seems really durable. He's a little small for it now so he doesn't have a ton of interest in it for now but I'm sure later on he will have great fun with it. We also received the Bee Bop Band by Parents for him from family and that he loves. Probably a bit more age appropriate and cute as can be.

Customer Buzz
My son really likes this set. We all pick an instrument and march all over the house playing loudly.

Re: durability: like others have mentioned, the tambourine head broke within about an hour, but I took it off completely, and the tambourine works fine. In fact, it's probably easier to hold now with both sides open.

The wooden stick thing cracked as well, but that's because I was rocking out to Run DMC's "Walk This Way." We put some wood glue on it, and it's fine.

Everything else, including the maracas (at least for now!) seems pretty solid.

The other big plus, at least from my standpoint, is that nothing is obnoxiously loud. The triangle is probably the loudest thing, and it's generally pleasant enough. The cymbals don't "crash" or reverberate like you think they might. I counted that as a plus, frankly. The maracas are fairly quiet. The tambourine makes its typical sound. And the wooden stick thing and the clapper are certainly tolerable, at least in the hands of my almost-two-year-old. (It's a different story when it's my husband's turn with the wooden sticks!)

Overall, I like the set. It's just what I was looking for -- easy to hold, easy to play, not obnoxious musical instruments.

Customer Buzz
This toy really brings our family together. We can each grab an instrument and start playing a song, and no matter how random each of our notes are, we're all working together and having fun. The pieces are durable and well-constructed and I'm sure we'll have them around for years to come. This would make a perfect gift for any preschooler!

Customer Buzz
I purchased this for my 2 yo. She does enjoy playing with the instruments and passes them out to everyone in the family so that we can all play together. Unfortunately, the product is not very durable. The white drum pad on the tamborine tore the first day she played with it. So we just tore the entire drum pad off and she just uses the tamborine without it. Also, the paint on the shakers have begun to chip off after a couple of uses. The cymbals do not make much of a sound, but my daughter does like clanging them together...good for eye-hand coordination. I probably would purchase another set next time around...one that is better quality.
