Great game, good imagination in writing out the stuff on the cards. Weird sense of humor which happens to coincide with mine.

Munchkin is a card game that makes fun of people who play and aspects of Dungeons and Dragons. Sadly while making fun of them, you yourself are playing a similar game. The game is hilarious if you are somewhat familiar with D&D and Lord of the Rings, but can still be funny if you are not. The writing for the game is great, and it is really fun to mess with your friends. Would recommend for teenagers and young adults, but dont let me stop you if you want to play.

"Laugh Riot or Slow Borefest?" 2009-07-04

This is a card game game by Steve Jackson which parodies table top role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, it is in it's own words: A role playing game without all that pesky role playing.

I've found that people's opinions are sharply divided over whether this is a good game or not. Everyone in my gaming group absolutely adores it, however, I find that many "mainstream" board gamers (of which I consider myself a member) find it boring and broken. Why? Well, we'll cover that. First an overview:

There are two stacks of cards, door (encounter) cards and treasure cards. During your turn you may play treasures, races, classes or curses (if they're in your hand) and fight a monster. You start as a level 1 human and you can build on yourself, the goal is to achieve level 10 through defeating monsters of playing certain cards. You play curses, monsters and monster modifiers on opponent's enemies to make them harder or to make your encounters easier. Victory results in 1 or 2 level ups and a number of treasures, designated on the card. Each monster has certain strengths and weaknesses against specific races, classes and even genders. They all also generally do something different if you can't win and fail to run away. Mechanics are simple enough to understand, you add your level to any item modifiers and you must beat the level of the monster (or tie it if you're a warrior)

Up to this point, Munchkin sounds pretty serious, well, it isn't. It's ridiculous. Some of the monsters, curses, items and modifiers are hilarious. (Like fighting an 'ancient' 'enormous' potted plant). In the later expansions you can get mounts (Need for Stead) and other new things. I found myself riding my trusty lawyer into battle that I tamed as a ranger equip with the lardly rod of meat... of destiny and the sword of slaying everything but squid, clad in my spudded leather armor. It's that kind of humor that you have to appreciate in order to appreciate Munchkin. You also have to appreciate that the rules basically state that you should cheat if you can get away with it and that rule disputes should be settled by loud, vicious arguing... but the owner of the game gets the final word. It's fun, it's silly, it's chaotic and sometimes the game can seem unfair, but if played for fun with friends and not specifically to win, it's one of the best card games money can buy.

I LOVE this game. It is so clever and so enjoyable. It's a good way to have fun with friends and laugh together at the titles of the cards. Ingenious game.

 "fun if . . . " 2009-02-02

If you are a fan of role playing games (especially the dungeon crawl type like D&D) or a fan of fantasy fiction then this game might appeal to you. The caveat is that everything is the object of a pun (e.g. a two-handed sword is a sword WITH two hands) or satire (e.g. go up a level for things like paying for your gaming group's pizza). If you can make fun of those things with obvious slap-stick then run, find three other people and enjoy. If none of those things appeal to you then you might want to pass. This is not a game to get serious with (it doesn't take itself seriously, so you shouldn't either). Don't think strategy, don't think advanced planning, don't even pay too much attention to the cards in your hand . . . half the fun is just ruining the other players' chances of winning. No, all the fun is ruining the other players' chances of winning. I consider it a good game if I stick it to someone really well, even if I lose horribly. Oddly, that is the point. If you hang out at comic shops, own a t-shirt from thinkgeek.com, or know the names Gygax and Eddings then this is two hours of dumb fun.
