"my spykids love this toy" 2009-04-29
By Nicholas Dujmovic (Vienna, Virginia)
They're so cute, using this to overhear the adults' conversation after dinner. The bug isn't exactly the most covert thing ever invented, but they think it is, so the adults pretend they don't see it and shape their talk accordingly. It's fun for all.

 "Not a total loss" 2008-08-08
By Jerry Helsing (Boston, MA)
I bought these for my son and I. He was a little too young for the better 22 channel walkies so I thought because of other reviews that it was worth the $12. Was I wrong, unless we are within 7 feet of eachother and there are no walls in between us, they do not work. What is the point of 7 feet. Anyway, the reason it wasn't a total loss is because my son just runs around pretending he is on the radio with me and loves it.

"Doesn't work too well indoors" 2008-01-07
By Gina De Jong (Modesto, Ca)
I bought these walkie talkies for my 6 year old for Christmas- he loves anything that's Spy Gear. He really likes the secret codes and my 3 year old really took interest in them too! They don't work too well indoors - I guess that's because of the walls. But we haven't tried them outdoors yet. I would assume they would work better without cbstacles. But for the price, they were a real good buy, and I didn't expect them to work over long distances since they were under $15. Both of my boys really like the belt clips too - makes them feel like official spies since they get to carry them around. Great toy for the price if your child likes to play spies or dress up!

 "Doesn't receive" 2007-08-18
By Cheri (chicagoland suburbs)
I bought these to play around the house with. I couldn't get reception except when my daughter was within about 20 feet or less in the same room. Once she left the room (even around the corner in the bathroom) the reception was so full of static that we couldn't understand each other. Not functional with no reception. I am returning mine.

"Fun game for the family" 2009-07-19
By Shaura Miller (Minidoka, ID)
Our family has enjoyed playing this game. Only four players can play at a time and we have more people in our family, but some family members will team up. In some ways this game is similar to Stop Thief with the spy communicator (which looks like a small hand-held radio) taking the place of the police scanner. When the communicator is first turned on, players are instructed where to place their secret agents. On each turn, a player can enter two moves into the communicator. The communicator then announces where on the board it thinks the player should be and instructs the player to pick up the communicator to listen to a message just for that player. We have found the volume on the communicator is loud enough that if a player does not firmly press the communicator to their ear then the other players can hear the message. Also, sometimes it is difficult to place the communicator back on the board properly so that the volume is loud enough for all players. Players use the messages to find an agent on each continent. When these agents are found the player received cards that can be used to help them find the mastermind. The first person to travel to travel to the spot where the mastermind is located and correctly identify that location wins the game. The game is fun and the element of the communicator adds some excitement.

"great fun for spy fans" 2008-11-10
By Bianca Ramos
This game is a lot of fun for my 5 and 8 year old son (and myself). Since we bought it we have played it every day in the evening, because they want to track down a mastermind and catch him every day. Instead of playing against each other, we are working as a team to get the clues and find the master mind. Even for my 8 year old it is not very easy to find the master mind by himself.

What the children love is that they always put codes into the phone to tell the phone where they are going or what they are doing. I enjoy calculating where the mastermind might be located from the clues given.

It is fun to find out new strategies how to track down the mastermind faster.

One draw back: The secret messages that only one person is supposed to hear are too loud and can be heard by everyone. When playing as a team it doesn't matter, but if you want a more serious match you need to move away from the group with the phone when receiving important messages.

This game has a high replay value. I highly recommend it.

Made of cheap snap together plastic. If a child really wants a secure box get him one made of metal from an office supply store. It may not say anything but it will last.

My son is young and is really into his room being a "club house". He likes the idea of it being his space. This was a great idea. He feels like when he sets the alarm that he has "locked" his room and his cousins can't get in. He checks the log to see if there have been any atempts to break in. Easy to install, doesn't damage the wood doors or frames.

"007 needed this in Quantum of Solace" 2008-12-26
By Amanda Richards (Georgetown, Guyana)
Quantum of Solace may have been Q-less, but now your budding secret agent can go one up on 007 with this nifty little espionage kit that's small enough for easy concealment in the inner pocket of your tuxedo.

Before I go further I should add that this really doesn't cost seventy six bucks, as listed. I'm guessing that the seller is out of stock, and listing a high price so you won't order it, and so they won't have to disappoint you.

Everything fits into a small black case, which has a secret pen compartment - but this is no ordinary pen! Yes, the pen works, but it converts into a flashlight, with a light tube attachment to "bend" the light so you can make notes in the dark. Snapping on a pair of lenses turns it into a telescope, or you can use one of them as a magnifying glass. The storage case locks and opens via a "lock socket" and the rear pen cap. Best of all, it has a motion sensor, which gives off a fairly loud alarm when someone breaks the invisible beam. Place it next to a door, across a hallway or by a window, and you'll know if anyone is infiltrating your space.

Limitations:

The light tube gives off a red light, which is hard to read by.

The scope is difficult to focus, even with the focus knob, and again, it'll have you seeing red.

It's all inexpensive plastic, and doesn't feel very sturdy. (Although nothing's broken thus far)

When purchased at the right price, this can be a fun toy for little spies aged six & up, with a bit of adult help in setting up. Uses two AA batteries (not included)

The spy pen lets me write at night when all the lights are off and I'm supposed to be asleep. The motion sensor works well. It signals very well. The magnifier is a little tricky because it's fuzzy if you try to zoom too closely. I like this so much I gave one to my friend for his birthday.

This toy is very well directed towards childrens differing interests. Being a child of the age of 11, I find this toy to be decent, and an overall good buy.

The one flaw is that this toy does not work at night, and is the reason I rate it at four stars, not five. If you are looking for a well-proportioned toy for your child, this toy, I find, is a great buy.

"One of the best of the Spy Gear toys!" 2005-08-24
By microjoe
More affordable than the "Spy Tracker" system from Spy Gear, which uses three detectors with antenna to map out where your enemy is. This on the other hand is a stand alone miniature motion detector with an audible alarm. Easy to hide, it lays under furniture, at corners, in drawers, facing doors, wherever you need advance warning that the other spies are coming.

Very easy for kids to operate, the battery lasts a long time, and most importantly, IT WORKS! The biggest complaint about some of the toys sold in the Spy Gear line is that so many of them do not work, so always read reviews or lists first. The gadget has a cool look to it, a little silver dome that is hidden pretty easily and detects movement from up to 20 feet. It has a tiny LED light that lets you know when it's on. Very fun and affordable toy, kids have fun for hours moving it all over the house and finding new ways to set it up.

"Quick visual thinking rules the day" 2008-11-01
By Val (NY)
This is a good game to step up to when Amazing Labyrinth gets easy. Think Plumber Pete with a lot more fun. Each player has 40 second turn to slide the tiles around and complete as many circuits as possible from his defuser to his opponent's fuses. Unused seconds can be banked for the final attempt. An encroachment penalty is there to prevent the simple solution of moving the defuser adjacent to the fuse. Rules are clearly explained; very easy for a child to explain it to another. The board is app. 8.5 inches square. Each tile is 1 inch square. The initial setup involves removing the plastic pieces from the 'trees' and installing them on the game board. The tiles are placed randomly, but the orientation of the tile in it's position is done by matching the triangle in the corner to another triangle on the board. The tiles are plastic with a sticker that has the printed circuit. Fuses are sturdy; one would have to work hard to break off the tips. The divider board is cardboard and will wear easily if care is not taken. Rules brochure is on heavy coated paper. Game set up and storage is simple and well explained.

Spy Wire will be a good one for holiday gatherings as it's fast and the adults will be willing to match their wits against the kids too. We haven't played a lot of games, but so far it seems well balanced in terms of no big advantage of the first player in a turn. Good game.

"Fast paced, challenging fun for two players!" 2008-09-07
By Mom to future Primatologist (Bellevue, WA United States)
My daughters (ages 7 and 8) got to play this game today and were addicted. It's marketed toward boys, but is appealing for both boys and girls. You slide the tiles trying to make connections before the electronic timer signals the end of your turn. If you make a connection(s) before time is out, stop your timer, and those extra seconds will be added to your final turn. Pull your opponents pegs on all the connections you've made, and when you find all three "special" pegs, your opponent has one last turn to try to tie the game, otherwise you win! The electronic timer and voice commands, coupled with the need for speed and strategy, make this game a winner. Even kids who prefer video games to board games will be drawn to this.

 "wild planet toys" 2009-06-19

This toy was advertised as having foam/or soft balls. Not so, they are hard plastic balls covered in black something. They hurt when are activated. Worse yet, they fly in every direction and are immediately lost. I have no Idea where to buy replacement balls. I am not impressed.

 "Toy for who?" 2009-01-19
By A. Cast (Australia)
I bought this for my 5 year old niece in the hope that she would set it up to surprise my sister. Instead, she likes to set it up for herself and her brother, they then 'surprise' themselves and run after the balls. The adults get a kick out of watching.

A word of caution, the foam balls come out fast and while they will not hurt anyone, it scares the living daylights out of the pets if they are too close and they can't work out where the balls came from. Make sure the kids keep it away from your pets. Don't consider using it to throw balls for the dog as they are foam and would be chewed through in minutes.

This is one of those toys for the whole family, who will enjoy it for different reasons. One of the best features is that you can be selective about the number of balls you launch, which means you can choose from slightly annoying to very annoying to your friends and co-workers.
