My very adult brother is very much into pirates, and he loved this gift. It is very durable. And- yes the 'hidden' area of the chest is easy to find, but this is intended for children, not as a safe for your retirement nest egg!

I bought this as a gift/decoration for my son's birthday party and it was WAY cuter than I expected. It was smaller than I thought (I didn't look at the dimensions before buying) but that was no big deal. THe stuff inside isn't great, but I didn't really care about that stuff, I just wanted the chest. My son is 2 and loves it, he loves to hide his stuff in there (and my stuff :)) Great product
I think this is a very durable wooden toy (my four year old has used it for a step stool before without it breaking). He loves to play pirate with it and go on treasure hunts. This is one of those classic role playing toys that all my children will be able to use. My daughter (3) has started getting in on the fun now and they hide the chest from each other and 'hunt' it down. It's just the right size for a 3 - 6 year old to handle while playing, and hide their 'treasures' in. I think it's equal all the other Melissa and Doug toys I've gotten.
I bought this along with a Treasure Hunter toy for my son for Christmas. He really likes the chest itself, which feels durable and has a red and blue rhinestone in each eye of the skeleton closure. He was excited to see the hidden compartment in the bottom of the chest. Yes, you can tell that there is a hidden compartment, but if there is anything in there it doesn't really matter. One of the sides of the board that comes out has a little piece carved out so little fingers can pull the board up. Someone complained that you can tell the piece comes out, but it's just a kid's toy. Not a big deal to me. He hasn't really played with the flag/bandana or the eye patch, so I can't really comment on those much. I'm sure he'll get into them when he gets a little older. The gold coins are plastic, which someone complained about, and come in a velvet-feel pouch. However, I don't mind them being plastic because so many metal parts on toys today are having lead found in them. I would rather have cheap plastic coins than have to worry about lead poisoning. Also, if they were metal, they might hurt someone or break something if they were thrown or dropped. I think the toy is cute and durable, and I'm sure it will get much use over the years.
My son is 11 years old and wanted the chest just to keep his own personal treasures. He loves it. It's smaller than i thought it would be but it's just right for what he uses it for.
I gave this toy to my nephew for Christmas. He was very happy. He even tried to bury it in the backyard.
The lid of the box came off the first time my son's friend dropped it on the floor. My husband was able to fix it with longer screws, however, I still belive the box is not durable enough. The patch is a bit on the tight side. The content of the box is indeed minimal, although as depicted in the photo.
Overall, I am not sorry I purchased it, it was a great addition to my son's Halloween costume.
We bought this item for my 5-year-old niece, who is obsessed with pirates. Captain Jacklyn Sparrow talked like a pirate for three days straight after she opened her present. She carries the chest with her everywhere, and she especially likes the "secret compartment." An excellent toy for imaginative play.
My 3 and 8 year old boys love this treasure chest. It is heavy, very sturdy and well constructed. The skull latch pivotes to side to release lock, and it is easy enough for my 3-year-old to operate easily. Inside the chest is a slightly raised bottom with three planks of wood; the middle plank can be removed to access the secret compartment. The fabric flag and eye patch are substantial enough. The plastic coins are heavy, thick, well-made and deeply imprinted with a skull. The chest is large enough to hide other objects. I like to fill it with different things and have them go on a treasure hunt. Measure approx. 9.5" wide, 6.5" deep, 7.25" tall.
