We learned this really cool song in pre-school called "days of the week", so when I saw this magnetic calendar I thought perfect, and it was. Every day when we are getting ready we sing our song and put up the new day. I then have him repeat the day of the week and month. What better way for him to have fun by learning his day's of the week.

We bought this for our 4 year old to help him with his concept (or lack thereof!) of time. He likes moving the numbers around, that he can see what's coming, and that he gets to be a part of the "planning" process. :-) My only complaint is the lack of blank tiles. You get ONE magnetic chunk to write your own special ocassion on. There are no tiles for sibling birthdays, so if you have more than 2 children, you'd have to just write, "Sibling Birthday" instead of "T-Rex's Birthday." There DOES seem to be a diversity in the tiles and it seems like all the major holidays are included. I just wish they had more room for individuality!
I definitely think this is a cute toy but I have some issues. I like the different magnetic pieces that indicate different daily events....for example "go to the dentist" or "sunny day". My problem is that you can go to the dentist ON a sunny day. The spaces for each day are a little too small so there's not room to put more than one event. So when my son went to the library and the doctor on the same day and it was raining outside, we could only fit 2 things and even the 2 things didn't fit well. They hung over into other spaces.
The other issue is that the board is made up of 2 separate pieces. A top piece is the calendar and the bottom piece is just like the calendar but with no writing...it's just blank to hold all the extra magnets. I wish it was the other way because the calendar is a little too high up for my child to see it great but if it were down any lower, my younger son would be able to grab the pieces off and get them in his mouth.
The idea is great. The pieces are cute. I just wish these issues had been addressed.
My daughter is enjoying learning about life through a real calendar. It is helping her to put time into perspective. It would be nice to have a few blank squares on which to write (with a wipe on/off pen) events that aren't included in the ones sent. M & D did a very good job of including a lot of events but everyone has unique activities.
This is such a perfect learning tool for children. The product is very well built and is easy to use and can not only teach them the days of the week, but months and the ability to manage their day to day duties and obligations. Very happy with this product.
My son is fascinated with numbers and time. He was so excited to get this calendar. Every day we he is able to tell me the day of the week, date, month, and year. He is only 3 years old. He knows how many days each month has, all the major holidays, family birthdays, and plots out his week every Sunday by putting what days he goes to school, what days he plays soccer, football, or baseball. He puts the type of weather on days that is sunny, rainy, snowy, or windy. It's great. My friends at work call him my blackberry because he's so "on it" about the date.
My 3 year old daughter received this calendar as a gift last year and has absolutely loved it.
I am a Montessori teacher and childcare provider and have been told by parents of my students (all ages 3, 4 and 5) that they love doing the date/calendar every day at school, they try to do calendar time on pretend calendars at home.
So this year's gift for my six little students will be the Melissa and Doug magnetic calendar, I know they will love it!
My 5 year old daughter loves this calendar. She is in the process of learning the months of the year and the days of the week and I found out about this product just in time. Thanks so much for creating this! I have found other versions but this one is the best hands down!
Very educational for the young who are starting to learn their days and events. I absolutely love this calendar. It is easy to use and my son loves changing the events.
