This product is good for learning how to it things precisely. Maybe I got it too late for my son. He pretty much hit all the pegs through a couple times and now he's lost interest. He was 20 months when I got it so I think he was past it. He now likes using the hammer on the doors or daddy. He just pushes the pegs through with his hand. Mostly he ignores it. I think it would be better for a younger baby.
My daughters each had a similar toy when they were babies, and when my granddaughter was a year old, we got one for her, too. Now her one-year old brother has his own, and it is one of his favorite toys. He loves to bang on the pegs (practicing his hand-eye coordination), it is durable and sturdy, the pieces are too big to swallow, it makes a banging sound which is satisfying to him without driving the rest of the family up the wall, and it helps him learn patience and persistence. I love the Melissa and Doug items for children!
My children loved this toy but the sides fell off within a week and paint chips off very easily. I did expect paint to come off since there is friction involved, but not within a few days after we just bought it. I did contact Melissa and Doug company and they said they would look into the quality of the product (sending a box so I can return it to them, along with others I bought that did the same). It may be a bad paint batch but I do think parents need to be aware that the sides fell off easily (they do snap back on, though you really need glue to keep it workable) and the paint coming off is not good for young children who might put it in their mouth.
Bought this for my two-year-old son, but my daughter(3) loves it just as much. A classic wooden, brightly colored peg set. Hammer 'em down, flip it, hammer 'em down again.
The only possible drawback is that they can and do pop the pegs out, which means we have to hunt under the couches from time to time, but anyone with toddlers should be used to that anyway. :)
This is nicely made as far as assembly, paint, etc. My only complaint is that it's a little too easy to pound the pegs down. My 14 month old is interested, but my 30 month old can push the pegs through with her hands. Fun for a small while, but not a long-term toy. BTW- We have another set that is plastic that is really loose and this isn't that bad. Maybe I have unrealistic expectations?
The holes are the right size, and it seems to be standing up to rough use.
Great product. High quality despite my son really pounding on it. Paint doesn't chip. Hammer solid.
It took only one showing of how to hit the pegs with the hammer for my 13 month old to catch on. He loves to hit the pegs, pull them out and put them in, or just push it around. It is a toy that is played with daily.
The toy I remember having as a child, the pegs didn't come out of the wood. These pegs do come out, therefore they are strewn all over the house very quickly. When they are together, my son loves the toy. He loves to do anything that makes noise and it helps him learn his colors. Overall it's a good toy, just wish the pegs didn't come out.
Liked the idea of an old toy my own children liked to play with and I ordered this for a great grandchild but this toy disappointed me because several of the pegs would fall out without being hit. Some pegs fit well but 3 of them were loose and just fall through the holes and are always lost. We tried rearranging the pegs in different holes but the same pegs would fall through all the holes.
